Step 8: Club Player ยท about 25 min
Weak Pawns and Good Trades
Goal: Kids can spot isolated and doubled pawns, and know to trade pieces (not pawns) when ahead.
You need: Demo board ยท One board and set per pair
1 ยท Teach it (15 min)
Read these out loud, or put them in your own words. Show each board on screen or set it up on a demo board.
1.โPawns can't move backward, so a weak pawn stays weak all game. Two kinds to know. An isolated pawn has no friendly pawns on the files next to it, so no pawn can ever protect it.โ
2.โDoubled pawns are two pawns of the same color on the same file. They get in each other's way and can't protect each other.โ
3.โWeak pawns are targets. Attack them with your pieces, especially rooks, and pile up until they fall.โ
4.โAnd when you're ahead in material, trade pieces, not pawns. Every trade makes your extra piece count for more. When you're behind, avoid trades and look for tricks.โ
- Making doubled pawns with a careless capture.
- Trading pawns when you're a piece ahead.
- Ignoring the opponent's weak pawns instead of attacking them.
2 ยท Play it: Pawn Detective (10 min)
Set up: Normal game in pairs.
- Play 15 moves each, then stop.
- Each player points out every isolated or doubled pawn on the board, for both sides.
- One point for each one you find. Then keep playing and attack the weak pawns!
3 ยท Practice and pass check
On iPads, kids open Student โ Step 8 โ Weak Pawns. On paper, print the worksheet. A kid passes by getting 2 of 3 on the pass check. The pass code for this lesson is S8-L8-KZ.
